When the Oregon Ducks joined the Big Ten, it was clear that the road would only get tougher for the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Ducks recruit at a high level and have the resources to continue doing so.
In their first year in the conference, Oregon went undefeated until the College Football Playoff and captured a Big Ten title. The Ducks are expected to remain a major contender in the conference alongside Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State.
One Ohio State newcomer — a five-star recruit with the potential to make an early impact — is already stirring the pot with Oregon fans.
Freshman cornerback Devin Sanchez responded to a Ducks fan on X (formerly Twitter), saying he never considered Oregon, but if he had, he would have started right away.
“Oregon was never a school I looked at, wasn’t even in my top three. I wouldn’t have to compete — the spot would be mine from the jump.”
That comment likely won’t sit well with Oregon players, who would strongly disagree with the notion that Sanchez could walk in and take a starting spot without competition. Sanchez was ranked the No. 1 cornerback in the class of 2025, and the Buckeyes were able to land him out of Texas.
Ohio State lost Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock to the NFL, while Davison Igbinosun chose to return for another season. Jermaine Mathews Jr. and Igbinosun currently lead the cornerback room, but Sanchez is pushing for playing time along with fellow top recruits Aaron Scott Jr. and Bryce West.
Ohio State doesn’t face Oregon in the regular season this year, but the two teams could very well meet in the Big Ten Championship Game or the College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes got the better of the Ducks in their most recent matchup — a blowout win in the quarterfinals of the CFP.
