Paul Finebaum all but disagrees with the Ohio State Buckeyes as the top team in the College Football Playoff rankings

The initial rankings were always going to have plenty of discussion.

The Ohio State Buckeyes debuted right where they wanted to be in the initial College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night. Ohio State is the top-ranked team in the country with ranked wins over the Texas Longhorns and Washington Huskies.

The Buckeyes have held the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll ever since their season-opening win over Texas. There was some debate about whether or not Ohio State would also be No. 1 in the CFP rankings, as the committee uses its own criteria. If the Buckeyes weren’t going to be the top-ranked team, the likely contenders would have been the Indiana Hoosiers or Texas A&M Aggies.

Paul Finebaum thinks another team has a better resume than Ohio State for the College Football Playoff rankings

“I don’t have a lot [of disagreements], because let’s remember, this is Week 1, and by the end of it, it doesn’t matter a whole lot,” Finebaum said on ESPN on Wednesday. “But I do have one, if I could share that, and that’s Texas A&M. In many ways, I think they probably have the best resume in the country. The metrics favor them.

“I get Ohio State. The eye test has been superb for them. And I also understand Indiana has looked good in every game, and they have that Oregon win.”

Ohio State’s best wins come over the No. 11 and No. 23 teams, and they still have to play No. 21 Michigan. Texas A&M, meanwhile, has a ranked win over No. 10 Notre Dame and still faces ranked opponents Missouri and Texas. The Buckeyes are on track to meet No. 2 Indiana in the Big Ten Championship Game, while Texas A&M is likely to face another highly ranked team in the SEC Championship if they continue to win.

The current rankings don’t matter much, and Ryan Day said earlier this week that he doesn’t care where Ohio State is placed right now. If the Buckeyes continue to take care of business one week at a time, they’ll end up where they want to be when the final College Football Playoff rankings are revealed.
