Ohio State held their annual spring game on Saturday and Scarlet defeated Gray by a score of 50-31. Scarlet was the first-team offense, while the defense was Gray. In Brian Hartline’s first action as the playcaller, the offense went with a heavy passing attack.
Ohio State was led by Julian Sayin on the day and he completed 16-of-26 passes. The Buckeyes scored on each of his first drives against the Gray defense.
Coming away from the game, one area of focus is going to be the defensive line. The interior of the offensive line looked good on Saturday and was able to get a good push against the Buckeyes.
"There was a lot of knockback,” Ryan Day said from the offensive line. When asked if the Buckeyes would look to make additions on the defensive line during the portal, Day had a simple answer.
"I think we've gotta take a hard look at it."
Hero Kanu was set to potentially start for the Buckeyes but transferred to Texas after last season. Ohio State has a solid duo on the interior of Kayden McDonald and Eddrick Houston, who made a switch from defensive end starting last season. Behind them are Jason Moore and Will Smith Jr., two soon-to-be redshirt sophomores, as well as Tywone Malone.
Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson are set to be the top two edge rushers but FCS transfer Logan George may have had the best day forcing pressure. George along with C.J. Hicks, Joshua Mickens, and freshman Zion Grady will be depth pass rushers for Ohio State in 2025.
The Buckeyes did the majority of their transfer portal work in the winter by bringing in players like TE Max Clare, OT Ethan Onianwa, OT Phillip Daniels, along with George. Ohio State isn’t going to be nearly as active in the spring, but the defensive line may be an area they have to add to.
