Sooners’ struggling position room finally has breakout performance they were looking for to turn season around
Oklahoma’s offensive line delivered its best performance of the season, boosting the offense out of its scoring slump
The offensive line for the Oklahoma Sooners has drawn a ton of criticism over the 2025 season. While most of it has been completely unfair since fans don’t know how to evaluate the offensive line, they haven’t been up to the standards of prior units the Sooners had in 2022 and 2023. After some up and down performances to start the year, they finally delivered their strongest performance of the season just in time for the heart of Oklahoma’s schedule.
Oklahoma’s offensive line was finally fully healthy for a good stretch of games, and that continuity paid off big against South Carolina. The offensive line opened up holes in the run game all game long and kept John Mateer clean for the entire game. For a unit that needed a confidence builder, this game came right at the perfect time.
The Sooners had their first 100 yard rusher of the season with Tory Blaylock breaking that and Oklahoma averaged over four yards a carry for the first time in SEC play. Mateer wasn’t under much pressure all game, and the offense finally broke through their scoring slump as a response.
Oklahoma’s offensive line delivers
After the game, Brent Venables and John Mateer were very complementary of the Sooners’ offensive line, praising them for their determination and toughness. Venables pointed out how physical they were at the point of attack and praised their ability to open holes in the run game all day.
Michael Fasusi, Heath Ozaeta, Jake Maikkula, Febechi Nwaiwu, and Derek Simmons haven’t been able to get a lot of continuity together with several injuries, but they’ve been able to string together games now, and finally it seems like the light bulb is clicking for this room. People don’t like to hear it, but it can take six or more games for a new unit to really click together on the offensive line, which is why continuity year-over-year is so crucial.
Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle also deserves credit for changing the run game up to a more vertical-looking attack. That played well to the offensive line’s strengths and got the backs going more downhill and let the offensive line playing bully ball as a unit. It was a perfect combination, one that I’m hoping the Sooners continue to stick to moving forward for the rest of the year.
