The Oklahoma Sooners finally landed their 2028 quarterback. On Friday, the Sooners landed a commitment from New Jersey QB Trey Tagliaferri. He’s the No. 11 QB in the class and a top 100 player in the class.

He’s the No. 9 player in the state of New Jersey out of Bergen Catholic and a top-200 player nationally. Some sites, including Rivals, have him ranked as high as No. 110 in the country. The 6’2, 190-pound prospect is a legitimate get for the Fighting Irish.

Tagliaferri visited Penn State three times, more than any other school. He also took trips to Rutgers, Ole Miss, Alabama, and Notre Dame twice before ultimately choosing the Irish. But now, he’s since been decommitted and has chosen OU. Here’s a bit of how that went down:

Trey Tagliaferri decommitted from Notre Dame, then committed to Oklahoma

“According to a source, Oklahoma was where Tagliaferri always wanted to be, but there didn’t appear to be a committable offer on the table. That changed after the talented quarterback committed to Notre Dame. That move prompted the Sooners to reevaluate the strategy and push hard for Tagliaferri. Once they did, it was over for Notre Dame, who held a commitment from him for a grand total of six days. There was a point where the money push just didn’t make sense, especially with Oklahoma getting the benefit of a tie.

“From the Fighting Irish side, this always felt like an impulsive decision. It’s early so Notre Dame will recover, but they will most likely need to expand their board now. That concluded one of the more bizarre Notre Dame recruitments in recent memory. Barring something unforeseen, Tagliaferri will more than likely land with the Sooners. I don’t expect him to remain uncommitted for long.” – Ryan Roberts, A to Z Sports Notre Dame

Now, the Sooners have Bowe Bentley in waiting. Then, in the 2027 recruiting class, they have Jameson Roberts, the Mobile, Alabama QB. Now for 2028, they have Tagliaferri. He’s also the first recruit in the 2028 cycle for Brent Venables and Ben Arbuckle.
