Texas A&M superstar defender on pace to do something not even Myles Garrett did for the Aggies
An A&M superstar is on the verge of entering legendary status for the Aggies
The Texas A&M Aggies are undefeated and primed for a spot in the College Football Playoff, and it’s in no small part due to the play of their elite defense this season. The Aggies boast the best third down defense in the country, are first in the country in sacks, and third in the country in tackles for loss.
They owe a lot of their success defensively to their leader on that side of the ball in defensive end Cashius Howell. Howell leads the country in sacks with 11.5, and his 12.5 tackles for loss are third in the SEC among all defensive ends. He’s proving to be a disruptive force that the rest of A&M’s defense feeds off of for success.
However, Howell has done something that not even one of the best players in A&M history has done, and is on pace to continue that trend.
Cashius Howell On Pace for the Record Books
Howell’s 11.5 sacks are the most by an A&M defender since Myles Garrett hit those tallies in 2014. However, Howell is just 1.5 sacks away from moving into the top leaderboards in A&M history in sacks in a single season. If Howell hits that tally in the next two games, he will be the first A&M pass rusher since Von Miller in 2009 to have 13+ sacks in a single season.
What makes this storyline even more intriguing is that Howell has a chance to tie Von Miller’s tally of 17 sacks in a single season as well this year. He already averages 1.15 sacks per game, and the Aggies have two regular season games, a likely conference championship game, as well as the playoffs for him to reach that. Breaking the all-time record held by Jacob Green (20 sacks) seems unreasonable, but the production is off the charts for Howell.
It’s no surprise then that Howell became the first A&M defender ever to be nominated for the Bronko Nagurski award for best defensive player in the country. Howell has collected SEC Defensive Line Player of the Week honors four times, setting a Texas A&M record and has become just the sixth player in league history to earn the award four times since its introduction in 2004.
We’re witnessing history, and A&M fans should appreciate it while they can.
