A former Tennessee Vols standout has reportedly signed with the Green Bay Packers.

Former Vols defensive back Micah Abernathy was signed by Green Bay on Wednesday according to a report from Sports Illustrated’s Bill Huber.

Abernathy spent the spring playing in the USFL.

Abernathy played for four seasons at Tennessee (2015 to 2018). And he saw plenty of highs and lows. Abernathy was around for the Vols’ memorable 5-0 start in 2016, which included a win via Hail Mary against Georgia. He was also around for the subsequent collapse in late 2016 and 2017. That collapse resulted in a new head coach for the Vols in 2018 in Jeremy Pruitt.

After the 2018 season, Abernathy went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft, but he was picked up by the Minnesota Vikings (he was later waived).

Abernathy will obviously have an uphill battle to make the Packers’ 53-man roster. But if he performs well and there are a couple of injuries, he might have a shot to stick. Landing on Green Bay’s practice squad, however, is likely Abernathy’s best-case scenario this fall.
