Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel confirmed on Monday that he’s making sure one of the program’s main storied traditions is present on a daily basis.

According to Heupel, the plan this season is to read each of General Robert Neyland’s seven game maxims every day.

Heupel said when he got to Tennessee he asked the players what traditions were important to them. The game maxims were one of the traditions that players pointed out as important.

I love this approach from Heupel. Reading the game maxims every day is obvious. It’s something the previous coaches at Tennessee also did. But I love that he left it up to the players to decide what was important.

The traditions at UT are always going to be important. But they don’t mean a lot if the players aren’t fully embracing them. Going through the motions doesn’t do much for a team.

But because this was the players’ decision, it means there will be some conviction each day when the maxims are read.
