The Tennessee Vols are reportedly pursuing a player in the NCAA transfer portal that would instantly fill a huge need in Knoxville.
According to 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong, Tennessee has been in communication with Virginia cornerback Fentrell Cypress.
“Tennessee, there’s going to be a call with Tennessee tonight,” said Wiltfong on Monday about the Vols’ interest in Cypress.
Cypress was a second-team All-ACC player this past season after compiling 14 pass breakups and 39 total tackles (he was named a first-team All-ACC player by Pro Football Focus).
The talented cornerback has a slight Tennessee connection, too. Cypress attended Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, SC. That’s the same high school that former Vols Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Worley attended.
There’s obviously a big gap in age between Cypress and Patterson/Worley, but I’m sure he’s quite familiar with both of those players (and perhaps they’ll both reach out to Cypress on the Vols’ behalf).

Tennessee doesn’t have a bigger position of need than cornerback — their pass defense was disastrous this season. Cypress won’t correct all of the Vols’ pass defense issues, but he’d instantly help the secondary improve.
