When the Tennessee Vols hired Tee Martin this past offseason, most fans were thrilled simply because they were happy to see the UT legend return "home".
But Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt doesn't make hires because he loves feel good stories. Pruitt only makes hires that will help his team win football games.
And that's exactly what the hire of Martin will do for UT.
Some folks might ask how much a recently fired offensive coordinator like Martin can help Tennessee.
It turns out, he can help a lot.
ESPN.com recently named USC as "wide receiver U", due in part because of the laundry list of Trojan wide receivers that have reached the NFL in the last five to seven years.
USC's wide receivers coach during that time?
Tee Martin, who joined the Trojans' staff in 2012 and coached wide receivers through last season.
Some of the names that Martin recruited and/or coached are: JuJu Smith-Schuster, Nelson Agholor, Robert Woods and Marqise Lee, among many others.
Now, obviously USC had a great wide receiver tradition before Martin's arrival. But let's be honest — there's no way Martin would've survived seven seasons with the Trojans if he wasn't an elite recruiter/position coach.
When you combine great tradition with great recruiting/coaching, great things are going to happen.
And what does Tennessee have?
A great wide receiver tradition.
There's no one on this planet better qualified to help restore the "wide receiver U" moniker to Tennessee than Tee Martin.
The former Vol's work at USC is proof of that.
