The Tennessee Vols were unable to take advantage of an electric atmosphere at Neyland Stadium this past weekend, falling 33-27 to the Oklahoma Sooners.

The loss was Tennessee’s first in Neyland Stadium against a team other than the Georgia Bulldogs since 2021.

Tennessee is 6-3 with three games remaining this season.

Oklahoma QB John Mateer talks about beating Tennessee in Neyland Stadium

Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer joined On3’s The Hard Count with Jd PicKell this week and he discussed what it was like to play in front of a raucous crowd in Knoxville.

“I think we love it, man,” said Mateer of playing in hostile environments. “And anybody playing in that atmosphere, it’s sick. It’s what everybody talks about.

“I think, for them (Tennessee), too. I mean, I would be so hyped playing in that game in that stadium. That was lit. And so we were all real excited. Everybody on this side loves when people say bad things about us. It was awesome running out of the tunnel [with] middle fingers up. It was great.”

Mateer put the game away for Oklahoma via a one-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter. He hit the crowd with a “shh” after scoring.

“It was cool. It was really quiet when I did that,” said Mateer of his touchdown celebration.

There’s no better feeling for a player than to go into another team’s stadium and get the win. Last year, the Vols went to Norman and beat the Sooners.

Oklahoma certainly got their revenge in Knoxville this year.
