Time may be running out on former Tennessee Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker’s NFL career.

Hooker, a Greensboro, NC native who will turn 28 in January, was released by the Detroit Lions before the start of the 2025 season.

The former Vol was signed to the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad in late August, but he was released earlier this month.

Hooker, a third-round selection by the Lions in the 2023 NFL Draft, has completed just six passes for 62 yards since entering the NFL.

The Carolina Panthers passed on bringing Hendon Hooker back

Earlier this week, Panthers head coach Dave Canales told reporters that Carolina would likely sign Hooker or Mike White to the practice squad ahead of the team’s matchup against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 11 to serve as the No. 3 quarterback behind Bryce Young and Andy Dalton.

On Tuesday, the Panthers decided to sign White instead of Hooker.

This is a concerning sign for Hooker’s future NFL career. If he can’t land a spot on his hometown team’s practice squad in his age-27 season, it seems unlikely that he will get a chance to make much of an impact in the NFL.

The good news for Hooker is that he can look at former Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs’ career for encouragement — Dobbs didn’t start his first NFL game until his sixth season.

We can’t say that Hooker’s NFL career is on life support just yet, but it’s certainly at a crossroads.
