Former Tennessee Vols baseball coach Tony Vitello has experienced some ups and downs in his first season as the manager of the San Francisco Giants.

The Giants got off to a slow start, losing eight of their first 11 games. The noise for Vitello, who had no previous MLB experience before landing the job in San Francisco, started almost immediately due to the slow start.

As a result of the noise, Vitello told reporters this week that he’s been in “hiding” in San Francisco.

Vitello, however, did make his way to a Dave Chappelle show on the Giants’ off day on Monday.

“I’ve been in hiding,” said Vitello when asked if he did anything in the city on his day off. “I’ve been holding out for some more wins. So I was up here working, but I did stop by a place, and a guy recommends a restaurant, so it got late and I said, ‘The hell with it, I’ll go to the restaurant.’ There were some Giants fans there, and they were great to me. And they’re coming to the games, and they’re talking about how much they believe in the team.

“And so I tried to return fire and say, ‘Well, what do you all got [going on]? You having fun?’ And they said, ‘We’re getting ready to go to the Dave Chappelle Show.’ It was raining, and I called an Uber and literally stared at the Uber and canceled it — apologies to that Uber driver — and said, ‘Why am I being so scared?’ I coach guys and tell them to not be scared. So I went up, tried to find a Giants fan that worked it, and that didn’t work. But persistence paid off, and I eventually got my ass into that show. And Dave was Dave. I needed a laugh, and it was good to do something in the city. It was a lot of fun, and met some cool people, and then got some rest.”

That’s classic Tony V. He’s a man of the people, so it’s no surprise that he’s immersing himself into San Francisco after coming out of “hiding”.

The Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night, so maybe we’ll see Vitello wandering around San Francisco a little more often now.
