The Vols and the Gamecocks didn’t play during the regular season.
Josh Elander names the starting pitcher for Vols’ matchup against the Gamecocks
Vols head coach Josh Elander met with reporters on Monday morning and he revealed that true freshman LHP Cam Appenzeller will start against South Carolina on Tuesday.
“I thought his tempo in his delivery was better (against Oklahoma last week),” said Elander on Monday when asked about Appenzeller. “He wasn’t as rushed. At times, it’s looked like he’s been kind of just jumping at the plate.
“But physically, I think as we’ve gone through (the season), the pitch count has been lower the last few weeks. He’s had extra time with Keegan (Knoll) to get his feet back underneath him. But when he throws strikes and he’s in attack mode, he’s as good as anybody.”
Appenzeller flashed his elite upside several times this season. At one point during the season, he pitched 18.1 consecutive scoreless innings against Georgia, Missouri, Vanderbilt, and LSU.
The Illinois native, however, may have hit a bit of a freshman wall late in the season –Appenzeller has given up 20 earned runs in his last five SEC outings — but the Volunteers will be counting on him in Hoover against the Gamecocks.
Tennessee and South Carolina are scheduled to play at 5:30 pm ET on Tuesday.
