Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Josh Dobbs will be playing for his seventh NFL franchise in the last four seasons in 2025.
According to multiple reports, Dobbs signed a free agent deal with the New England Patriots on Monday.
Dobbs' contract with the Patriots is for two years.
New England is certainly an interesting landing spot for Dobbs, who spent the 2024 season with the San Francisco 49ers.
Drake Maye, a first round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, is the Patriots' starting quarterback. Former Vols quarterback Joe Milton, a sixth round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, was seemingly poised to serve as New England's backup quarterback in 2025 with Jacoby Brissett (last year's backup) hitting free agency this week.
The signing of Dobbs, however, seems to suggest that there could be a battle between the two former Tennessee signal-callers for the No. 2 quarterback job in New England.
Milton has a year of experience with the Patriots under his belt, but that won't give him an advantage over Dobbs due to the fact that there's a new coaching staff in New England.
In fact, the new coaching staff is more familiar with Dobbs. New England head coach Mike Vrabel had Dobbs on the roster in Nashville in late 2022 (Dobbs started a couple of games for the Tennessee Titans). Several other members of Vrabel's staff, including running backs coach Tony Dews and wide receivers coach Todd Downing, are also familiar with Dobbs from the former Vol's short stint with the Titans in 2022.
Could this move mean that the Patriots are considering trading Milton after his breakout performance in New England's season-finale last year?
It certainly feels like a scenario that could be in play for the Patriots.
Tim Banks leaves no doubt how he feels to be back with the Tennessee Vols after coaching on an expiring contract last season
