National media outlet names transfer addition that isn’t getting enough hype as a spring game standout for the Tennessee Vols
The Tennessee Vol made numerous transfer additions this offseason, but not all of those additions are getting enough hype. Tennessee’s spring football game, however, may soon change that.
The Tennessee Vols added 21 transfers to their roster during the January transfer cycle.
Most of those additions came on the defensive side of the ball — specifically because the Volunteers brought in a new defensive coordinator in Jim Knowles.
The Vols, however, also made some offensive transfer additions. And one of those additions was singled out by On3 this weekend for his performance in Tennessee’s Orange and White spring football game.
On3 praises Tennessee Vols running back Javin Gordon
Tulane transfer Javin Gordon, 5-foot-10/210 pounds from Toccoa, GA, quickly made his presence felt in Neyland Stadium on Saturday by breaking off a 62 yard touchdown run.
Gordon was named by On3 as a spring game standout.
“Tennessee looked to the portal in January to build up more depth in its running back room,” wrote On3’s Pete Nakos. “The Volunteers added Tulane transfer Javin Gordon, who was coming off a 516-yard season. Saturday showed a glimpse that Gordon could be the addition Tennessee was looking for. He ripped off a 62-yard touchdown run, one of the highlights of Saturday’s scrimmage.”
It’s not a surprise that Gordon, who will compete with DeSean Bishop and Daune Morris for carries in Tennessee’s backfield, had a great spring game — the former Tulane running back has been terrific all spring.
VolQuest’s Austin Price noted during a recent appearance on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will that Gordon is playing with a lot of “self-confidence” this spring.
“Gordon has a chance to get more run,” said Price. “… Gordon’s an interesting player. [He has] a low center of gravity — kind of like a bowling ball, to a degree. To me, he’s a nice change of pace. He’s not just like DeSean Bishop. He’s not as muscular, but I think [he] is just more of a low center of gravity running back.
“Gordon comes in having started five games at Tulane last year. And has some confidence in himself. I think he really fits well in with the other running backs in the room. He’s not a huge personality, but he has a self-confidence about himself that he feels like he can have success.”
VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs also singled out Gordon recently while discussing how spring practice has gone so far for Tennessee.
“He has looked the part,” said Hubbs of Gordon. “Now, they’re starting to add pads, and we’ll see. But I think he can certainly push in that running back backfield, where a guy like Daune Morris understands he’s got to show up every day — nothing is a given for him to be the one-two punch with DeSean Bishop.”
Tennessee’s running backs see plenty of action in Josh Heupel’s offense. Having three capable running backs should help keep everyone fresh for the entire season.
