Tennessee Vols athletic director Danny White made a bold statement during UT baseball's national championship celebration in Knoxville on Tuesday that will have Volunteers fans smiling all summer (and maybe throughout the fall).
White promised to build a championship culture at Tennessee when he took over as the program's athletic director in early 2021. And that's exactly what he's done over the last few years.
Tennessee's had numerous teams get close to championships since White replaced Phillip Fulmer as the program's athletic director.
On Monday night in Omaha, the UT baseball team broke through, claiming Tennessee's first national championship in baseball after beating Texas A&M in a best-of-three series.
During the championship celebration on Tuesday, White told a huge crowd of Vols fans that the best is yet to come for Tennessee athletics.
"The good news, the exciting part, the most exciting part, we're sitting here celebrating a national championship and the best is yet to come," said White. "The best is yet to come for Tennessee baseball, the best is yet to come for Tennessee athletics. Our future is so bright. Our fan base is the best in the country. You guys are the engine that gives us this huge opportunity to do really, really special things."
White doesn't view the Vols' win in Omaha as a culmination of the work that he and his staff have put in the last three years. Instead, he views it as just the start of a special run for the Tennessee athletic department.
It's hard not to believe White when he says the best is yet to come. After hearing nothing but broken promises for more than a decade, Tennessee finally has a leader in White that's delivering on the promises he's made to fans and alumni.
And that should be incredibly exciting for Vols fans. This feels like the first of many championship celebrations in downtown Knoxville.
