Tennessee Vols baseball coach Josh Elander showed everyone that he’s not messing around this summer by making a big-time move that it took UT football coach Josh Heupel years to make.

After a solid, but unspectacular, first season as the Vols’ head coach, Elander quickly decided that he had to make a major change.

Josh Elander and Tennessee part ways with pitching coach Josh Reynolds

According to a report from VolQuest’s Mike Wilson, Tennessee is parting ways with pitching coach Josh Reynolds.

Reynolds joined Tennessee’s staff last year, but he was promoted to pitching coach after Tony Vitello and pitching coach Frank Anderson left Rocky Top for the San Francisco Giants.

Tennessee’s pitching took a step back in 2026 under Reynolds, prompting the change.

The Vols’ team ERA was 4.72 in 2026, which, as Wilson pointed out, is the highest mark since 2013.

Plenty of fans were vocal about Tennessee needing a change at pitching coach, but many wondered if Elander, who in his first full offseason as a head coach, would actually make the move — especially after it took Heupel nearly five years at Tennessee to fire an assistant coach (Heupel had never fired an assistant coach in his head coaching career, dating back to his time at UCF).

Fans got their answer on Thursday — Elander isn’t afraid to move on from one of his coaches if it’s not working out.
