Many fans of the Tennessee Vols tuned into ESPN2 on Thursday night. After all, the crown jewel of Josh Heupel’s 2027 recruiting class was going to play before a national audience.

There actually were a trio of Tennessee commits on the field for the matchup between national ranked Brentwood Academy (No. 13) and Chattanooga Baylor (No. 12). LB Kenneth Simon II and WR Kesean Bowman were playing for Brentwood Academy.

But the eyeballs were mostly there for Gabriel Georges. And what a show he put on.

Gabriel Georges totaled 250 yards from scrimmage in Baylor’s 38-20 win. He went for 178 on the ground and added 73 more through the air, finding the end zone three times in the process.

And it was some individual efforts that dropped jaws as well. In the first quarter, he got hit and did a front flip, landing on his feet and continuing to run.

Then, in the fourth quarter, he caught a pass and tore through the Brentwood Academy defense, breaking tackle after tackle after tackle and continuing to run even with his helmet ripped off.

That performance drew some major respect from a former Tennessee standout who knows a thing or two about performance in the backfield.

Former Tennessee running back Jabari Davis handed Gabriel Georges quite the compliment, posting on Twitter (X) that his balance might be better than that of former Vols RB Alvin Kamara.

Former Vols RB says Tennessee RB commit David Gabriel Georges might have better balance than Alvin Kamara

I’ve followed Tennessee football for over 30 years, and perhaps the most naturally talented running back I’ve seen in orange and white is Kamara. Misused by Butch Jones (some have actually disputed this, which is one of the most mind-boggling sports takes of my adult life), Kamara’s overall combination of vision, speed, agility, power, and hands are unlike anything I have seen in Knoxville in the 21st century. Maybe longer.

But I can say I have not seen a high school player dominate other high school players like this in a long time. Certainly not in Tennessee high school football. There are players who did this to their unfortunate opponents, like Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley. This feels like we’re watching a Henry/Barkley-esque dominance play out.

That dominance will be coming to Knoxville soon enough. For now, enjoy the anticipation, Tennessee fans.
