Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar landed in a good situation after going unselected in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Aguilar signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent almost immediately as soon as the draft ended.

The Jaguars don’t have a very crowded depth chart at quarterback, which obviously improves Aguilar’s chances of locking down a roster spot.

Unfortunately for Aguilar, his time with the Jaguars got off to a tough start at OTAs on Tuesday.

John Shipley and Gus Logue of the Prowler Podcast broke down what they saw at day one of Jaguars OTAs and they pointed out that Aguilar had the “worst play of the day.”

“We’ll go with the worst play of the day,” said Logue. “Joey Aguilar had a three-yard slant that turned into a contested catch. I’ve never seen that happen on a play that’s basically just 10 yards away. But it was a highlight reel for the [undrafted wide receiver] that ended up coming down with it.”

“I will say: Carter Bradley is firmly in pole position for that QB 3 job after today,” added Shipley.

With Nick Mullens seemingly locked in as the Jaguars’ No. 2 quarterback behind starter Trevor Lawrence, Aguilar is battling Carter Bradley, a former South Alabama quarterback, for the No. 3 quarterback job.

It’s only May, so it’s not like a bad day at OTAs is going to completely doom Aguilar’s chances, but it’s also clear he’s got some work to do to earn a spot on Jacksonville’s 53-man roster.

Joey Aguilar is adjusting to an NFL cadence at the line of scrimmage

One area where Aguilar’s had to make an adjustment in the NFL is with his cadence at the line of scrimmage.

Aguilar, like most college quarterbacks, used a clap at the line of scrimmage at Tennessee.

“I think Joey’s done a nice job of learning a lot of information in a short period of time,” said Jaguars head coach Liam Coen earlier this month. “Especially [since it’s] so much different than he’s used to. Just from a cadence standpoint, that’s something that he’s had to get used to doing.”

Aguilar is far from the first young quarterback to get off to a rough start. What’s important for Aguilar, though, is how he responds in the coming days.
