NASHVILLE — Receiver Tyler Lockett asked for his release from the Tennessee Titans (1-6) on Monday evening. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news.

In reality, Tennessee was as done with Lockett as the veteran was with them.

Tyler Lockett’s brief time in Tennessee served its purpose

Think of it as a mutual parting of ways.

Lockett, who turned 33 last month, was signed by the Titans before the 2025 NFL Draft. With the wide out room in Nashville basically consisting of Calvin Ridley, it made sense for general manager Mike Borgonzi to hedge his bets with a veteran buffer while the team looked to organically grow its depth. Borgonzi drafted three rookie pass catchers in this year’s fourth round in receivers Chimere Dike (No. 103) and Elic Ayomanor (No. 136) and tight end Gunnar Helm (No. 120).

As Tennessee brought its youth movement up to speed, Lockett would serve as an immediate option for quarterback Cam Ward.

Ayomanor emerged as an immediate starting option on the outside opposite Ridley. Dike, who serves as the team’s primary kick and punt returner, filled in for Ridley in the last two weeks while the veteran works his way back from a hamstring issue and did well with his opportunities on offense. Against the New England Patriots (5-2) in Week 7, Dike caught all four of his targets for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Lockett, with 10 receptions for 70 yards on the season, has seen a steady decrease in his snap count as a result (33, 32, 38, 36, 17, 20, 14).

If Lockett was a tradable asset, he would have been moved by now. Granting the 11-year pro his release by request, rather than cutting him outright, also allows the club to save some money on the transaction. Now, with an open roster spot, Borgonzi can add to the receiver room or consider other options at positions that might have more long-term value to the Titans.

Lockett is free to sign with any other team on Wednesday of this week.
