Strengths

  • Play Strength and Contact Balance: Hampton is a big-bodied running back who knows how to use his size to his advantage. He runs through arm tackles with eas.
  • Violence: Some running backs want to avoid contact and run around you. That's not Hampton. He wants to run right through you and has the size and strength combination to do so.
  • Receiving Ability: Hampton isn't just a violent runner, he displays all the tools to be a weapon as a receiver out of the backfield. You aren't going to call a lot of intricate routes for Hampton, but his soft hands and ability in the open field allows him to be a versatile weapon.

Weaknesses

  • Tempo: One of Hampton's big issues is varying speeds, especially in open space. He struggles to downshift and maneuver around defenders to force missed tackles.
  • Evading Defenders: He does a great job of running through defenders and can run past them, but forcing them to miss in the open field isn't his specialty.

Player Evaluation

If there was no Ashton Jeanty in this class, Hampton would likely be the top running back in this class. He is a stout running back who can do a little bit of everything out of the backfield. At North Carolina, Hampton lined up nearly exclusively next to the quarterback in the shotgun and thrived in that spot.

Whether it be zone or gap concepts, Hampton can do it all for you. He can run through defenders and can soften angles to avoid defenders. However, he struggles to make defenders miss in open space and that could be viewed as limiting.

Player Comparison

David Johnson

Johnson is a very talented player who, unfortunately had a short peak in the National Football League. He was a third-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Northern Iowa who took the NFL by storm as a bigger dual-threat running back.

Johnson was a first-team All-Pro in his second season in 2016 with 1,239 yards rushing and 879 yards receiving and 20 total touchdowns. His play style is incredibly similar to Hampton's and his eight-year career resulted in 6,876 total yards and 57 total touchdowns.
