Pros for LaNorris Sellers

  • Classic toolsy quarterback. Has the size, athleticism, and arm talent to be great
  • Flashes great accuracy on the move. Throws well when squaring up on the move and when moving laterally.
  • Is comfortable throwing on the move to both sides, which adds an explosive dynamic.
  • Is a massive asset as a runner inside and outside of structure. Sellers can run with speed in open space, along with power in short yardage.

Cons for LaNorris Sellers

  • Mechanics are incredibly inconsistent. Sellers displays footwork that is all over the place and you don’t know where the ball is going to go.
  • Accuracy is rough, especially when throwing short. Mechanics are at fault here.
  • Progressions are spotty. Doesn’t work through them consistently, and doesn’t have the most experience with them.
  • Isn’t the best decision maker. Sellers will stare down targets and sometimes miss defenders completely.

Background

Sellers wasn’t a top recruit, ranked by 247 sports as a three-star and the No. 34 overall quarterback in the class of 2023. From Florence, South Carolina, Sellers picked the Gamecocks over the likes of the Syracuse Orangemen, Virginia Cavaliers, Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and Virginia Tech Hokies.

Sellers redshirted as a true freshman, but got into three games, completing all four passes for 86 yards and two touchdowns. He won the starting job in 2024 and opened a lot of eyes with his dual-threat ability by completing 65.6% of his passes for 2,534 yards, 18 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, while also running for 674 yards and seven touchdowns.

There was a lot of hype surrounding Sellers going into the 2025 season, as he would be NFL Draft eligible after the season if he wanted to declare. It didn’t go as well as he would have hoped. His completion percentage dropped nearly five points, throwing 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions, while running for 270 yards and five touchdowns. He dealt with some injuries during the season.

Instead of entering the NFL Draft, Sellers decided to both return to school and South Carolina. It’s a good decision to go back to school, but working with new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles won’t do him any favors for the next level.

Player evaluation

When discussing wide receivers, there is the height/weight/speed archetype. Sellers is exactly that when it comes to quarterbacks. He’s got every tool to thrive, but can he put it together and be a consistent player?

Let’s start with the good when it comes to Sellers. He’s got all the tools to be great. Sellers has a rocket arm that he can hit small windows with and attack every blade of grass. He flashes really good accuracy when he’s on the move, which is a huge plus for a player with his rushing ability. Sellers is a dynamic runner. He has the size to dominate in short yardage with the athelticism to eat up yards quickly.

While the idea of Sellers is currently good, it is still just an idea. He doesn’t display good enough mechanics to be consistent. His feet are all over the place, and it impacts both his accuracy and ball placement, especially in short yardage. Decision making and progressions are also inconsistent. Sellers needs to do a better job identifying what’s going on down the field, which is his biggest area of opportunity.

Overall, Sellers has a ton of potential, and will be a high-priority for quarterback needy teams in the NFL this season. With Briles at offensive coordinator, there is cause for concern that his offense won’t end up helping him develop fast ahead of the 2027 NFL Draft.
