Day One of the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl practices has ended, and several players put up notable performances on the day. As players from all sorts of backgrounds competed to help improve their draft stock, iron sharpened iron today.
The West team practice was a physical bunch today, immediately starting out in full pads and delivering some punishing blows throughout.
Who stood out after Day One?
Ten Shrine Bowl West Team standouts from Day One
Maryland DT Jordan Phillips
Plenty of scouts came into the Shrine Bowl with Jordan Phillips as their highest-graded player, and he backed up his play on Day One. Phillips completely dominated the competition today. Against a good group of offensive linemen, nobody could block Phillips one-on-one aside from two reps on the day.
Phillips has several top-100 grades from scouts across the board, but his performance today might have him pushing into the second round.
Indiana DT C.J. West
If Phillips wasn't the best player today, CJ West was. Like Phillips, West dominated most of practice with terrific fluidity and movement skills. He ripped off a nasty spin move that drew quite a stir with scouts, and shut down run game drills.
He had borderline top-100 grades entering today, but his strong performance might have solidified his push into the first three rounds.
Cal DB Nohl Williams
Cal produced a number of standout players today, but Nohl Williams stole the show in that group. One of the most physical and chippy defensive backs in this class, Williams handled every rep today with ease and let receivers know when he won.
Williams feels like a standout in an odd cornerback class with his production on the ball and athleticism.
UNLV WR Ricky White
Ricky White entered today with quite a few fans in scouts I talked to today, and his performance today only reinforced that. He toasted aforementioned standout Nohl Williams on a release and his height/weight/speed combo stands out. To no one's surprise as well, White was an active participant in special teams work (four blocked punts this season).
North Carolina DB Alijah Huzzie
A cornerback who entered with little buzz, Huzzie had some standout reps throughout the day. He consistently stayed in phase and generated pass breakups on the ball, including one rep with scouts whistling at the end of practice.
Cal LB Teddye Buchanan
A former track star, Teddye Buchanan's movement skills popped in drills throughout the day. He made a few interesting plays in coverage on the day and had a few scouts I spoke to impressed with his day.
Buchanan had Day 3 grades from scouts I spoke to, and while he likely won't push into Day 2, he feels like a candidate to push his stock up a round or two when the Shrine Bowl ends.
Montana State OL Marcus Wehr
The offensive line across the board had a terrific day, but Marcus Wehr was a player I kept coming back to. He was remarkably consistent, rarely losing reps and controlled defenders with routine ease for most of practice with terrific hand placement. He was one of just two OL who won a rep against Jordan Phillips today, making his day that much more impressive.
Wehr had late Day 3 grades, but he's proven himself against better competition today and might push himself up a few round grades if he keeps that performance up.
Boston College C Drew Kendall
Drew Kendall joined Marcus Wehr as the only two blockers to win a rep against Jordan Phillips today, and Kendall controlled reps. He's on the smaller side (measuring in at 304 pounds), but he's a savvy technician with good play strength and showed out against the field of defensive linemen today.
Cincinnati OT John Williams
In my opinion, John Williams was the best offensive tackle on the day. His movement skills popped off film, redirecting with ease, and his hand placement looked better in drills than I thought on film. In an inconsistent tackle class, John Williams could be a riser on Day 3 if he keeps it up throughout the week.
Ole Miss WR Antwane "Juice" Wells
Juice Wells measured in with small hands, but he was caught virtually every pass thrown his way today, including making a nice adjustment to an underthrown ball. He separated well throughout the day in drills as well.
Scouts were split on his stock entering the day, but he put together a good performance, standing out in a good crop of wide receivers.
