Pros:

  • Unfathomable Size/Speed/Movement Combination
Nic Scourton is a monster. 6'4", 285 pounds, and he can sprint past the best offensive tackles while bending like a gymnast. Even when quarterbacks think they can get to the edge or elude him, Scourton can get after them with unreal range, closing speed, and strength. "Scary" is the best word to describe Scourton. "Scary Scourton" should probably stick.
  • Consistency and High Motor
Scourton has logged 15 games in row with multiple pass rush pressures or a sack when logging at least 25 snaps. His tenacity, every down punch-you-in-the-face style, and variety of ways to win makes him one of the most consistent edge defenders in all of college football.
  • High Intelligence and Awareness
One of the strangest aspects of his profile is that he dropped into coverage over 130 times in 2023 when he was still at Purdue despite weighing 280+ pounds. He allowed one reception on the year. That seems impossible, but it's because of his awareness, intelligence, and understanding of spacing. Scourton always clearly knows his role and how the entire defensive scheme fits together regardless of what he's asked to do.

Cons

  • Missed Tackles
This is an issue for quite a few edge defenders this year. Not to the extent that Scourton should drop in the 2025 NFL Draft, but he's missed far too many tackles over the last two seasons. It can be hard to completely redirect 285 pounds adequately to reposition for a tackle in the run game if his first step gets him out of position initially. Nitpicking here, but he needs to make sure his aggression doesn't put him in a bad spot at times. That's contributed to some misses and arm tackle attempts over the last two years.
  • Fit, Role, and Versatility Questions
Nic Scourton is a wild athlete at 285 pounds who wins consistently against good college competition off the edge. However, he's a bit thick to be pass rush winner at edge, and a bit undersized to shift inside to defensive tackle. Some teams might screw him up early on trying to force him into a role that fits his body instead of his skill set. He should stick outside, but hopefully a good defensive line coach helps him learn to win inside of 5-tech too so he adds some pre-snap versatility to his game.
  • Leverage Improvement
He's a freak of nature in pass rush. Not many notes there. But when engaged in the run game, setting the edge, or trying to force action to a particular gap, he can rely a bit too much on his athleticism instead of technique. Scourton can stand up a bit straight in those situations, setting him up to be moved instead of moving offensive lineman at will like he should be able to given his raw ability. His strength and size combination allows him to win most of the time anyway.

Player Evaluation:

Nic Scourton is an alien who happens to play defensive end. No one should be able to move the way he does at his size. Scourton can spin off offensive tackles at near full sprint, flying into opposing quarterbacks as if there wasn't any blocker in his way. It's a special sight to see when Scourton gets on a roll chasing after quarterbacks.

He could stand to improve in the run game and leverage optimization. If he cleans up some little things with his tackling and technique when he isn't rushing the passer Scourton has perhaps the highest ceiling to become the most complete edge defender in the 2025 NFL Draft class.

Player Comparison:

Carlos Dunlap
Dunlap is a bit taller than Scourton, but he's a monstrous force at defensive end around 285 pounds just like Scourton. The bar for this comparison is high given Dunlap has racked up around 100 career sacks, but Scourton has that kind of upside given his traits.
