The Carolina Panthers are excited about the direction the team is headed and finally have the core players in the building to start making real strides of progress in the NFC. However, things eventually get pricey when that starts to happen.

The Panthers got the ball rolling on that front late Thursday night when the team agreed to a three-year deal with wide receiver Jalen Coker that keeps him in Carolina through the 2029 season. It’s the first of many contract extensions the team will hand out on offense over the next few years.

According to Ian Rapoport, Coker’s deal is worth $35 million with incentives up to $41 million. A strong pay raise compared to one-year exclusive rights free agent tender he signed earlier this offseason worth $1,075,000. It also sends a strong message about his upcoming role in this offense.

Jalen Coker’s contract extension with the Carolina Panthers clearly establishes his offensive role

The Panthers already have one stud wide receiver in the making in 2025 first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan. The WR2 role was seemingly to be decided this offseason between Coker, Xavier Legette, and rookie Chris Brazzell II. This deal signals that Coker is the unquestioned WR2 for this offense, which many already suspected.

“I definitely believe that the sky is the limit for the two of us,” McMillan said of Coker. “He definitely showed what he’s capable of doing, and I have no doubt in my mind that he’s going to be a really good player.”

During mandatory minicamp, McMillan was limited throughout the week while dealing with some foot soreness. Coker was one of the team’s top targets that was forced to step up and further strengthening the connection he had with quarterback Bryce Young.

“He looks great. He looks fit. He’s attacking the ball just like we know he can,” Panthers head coach Dave Canales said of Coker during OTAs. “The big thing for him is for he and Bryce to really just continue to take steps in terms of chemistry.”

Clearly, Coker and Young’s connection was satisfactory throughout the offseason program, allowing the Panthers to pull the trigger on this extension.

Now that it’s done, Coker is primed to be a staple in this offense for years to come and certainly earned the pay raise he’ll be receiving going into his third season with the team with the opportunity to earn even more thanks to the added incentives.
