Panthers will feel ripple effects of the Dexter Lawrence blockbuster trade as 2026 NFL Draft landscape shifts in the first-round
The blockbuster trade between the New York Giants and the Cincinnati Bengals just drastically shifted the top of the 2026 NFL Draft and the aftershock will impact even more teams such as the Carolina Panthers.
The latest NFL blockbuster trade went down on Saturday when the New York Giants traded DT Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for the 10th overall pick and teams such as the Carolina Panthers will feel the ripple effects of that deal.
This trade absolutely changes the landscape of the 2026 NFL Draft, which is set to kick off on Thursday night. The Giants are now armed with the fifth and 10th overall picks and one player is already gaining significant interest for New York.
After the deal was made, NFL insider Mike Garafolo noted Giants general manager Joe Schoen spent time earlier in the week with Arizona State wide receiver Jordan Tyson, a potential Top-10 target with either selection. Here’s why that matters for the Panthers.
WR run is going to happen a lot earlier in the first-round of the 2026 NFL Draft
Last week, Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate seemed like the only player at his position viewed as a Top-10 lock. Tyson now enters into that conversation following his showcase workout this week and this heavy interest from New York. USC’s Makai Lemon is another name to watch that can sneak into the Top-10 as well.
All of this to say, the wide receiver run is going to happen a lot earlier than expected in the first-round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Wide receiver is one of the positions the Panthers have been heavily linked to with the 19th overall pick. If that wide receiver run is indeed aggressive, things will really get screwed up for the Carolina Panthers.
First-round Doomsday scenario for the Carolina Panthers
Using the A to Z Sports Mock Draft Simulator, here’s how this can make life difficult for the Panthers.
- Giants – WR Jordyn Tyson
- Cleveland Browns – WR Carnell Tate
- New Orleans Saints / Los Angeles Rams – WR Makai Lemon
- New York Jets – WR Omar Cooper Jr.
- Baltimore Ravens – TE Kenyon Sadiq
- Minnesota Vikings – TE Kenyon Sadiq / S Dillon Thieneman
Once the Panthers are on the clock, there’s a strong chance all of those players are off the board. If that’s the case, Carolina’s best options would be WR KC Concepcion or S Emmanuel McNeil-Warren. And in that scenario, the Panthers should just consider trading back.
It just goes to show how one little trade can really shake things up down the line for the Panthers. Hopefully it still works out to where one of the top pass catchers or Thieneman is on the board when Carolina is on the clock.
