Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow suffered a calf injury last week that's expected to keep him out "several weeks".

While it's unclear when Burrow will return to practice, most folks are assuming that the superstar quarterback will be ready for Cincinnati's Week 1 matchup against the Cleveland Browns.

And if Burrow is ready to take the field in Week 1 as expected, he'll have plenty of motivation to perform at a high level thanks to Browns reporter Tony Grossi.

Grossi said on ESPN Cleveland that if Burrow plays in Week 1 against Cleveland that he won't be at his best.

"The layoff (the time Burrow missed during training camp) killed him last year," said Grossi. "Burrow's first game he was intercepted almost five times against Pittsburgh. And he looked terrible. He didn't practice — same situation that's going to happen this year. So he may play, but he's not going to be Burrow at his best. So advantage Browns."

We already know that Burrow loves bulletin board material — he said as much during the playoffs last season — so I'm not sure Browns players will love that Grossi just handed Burrow and the Bengals some free motivation ahead of a pivotal Week 1 matchup.

Burrow is one of the most competitive athletes on the planet. And you know he's still not over losing to a hobbled Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game last season.

Most folks had the Bengals beating the Chiefs to advance to the Super Bowl in the playoffs thanks in large part to the ankle injury that Mahomes suffered the previous week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mahomes, however, played through the injury and was able to lead the Chiefs to a win over the Bengals.

Burrow's injury is a bit different than Mahomes' injury, but there's no doubt that Burrow will be looking to show he's also capable of playing through a tough injury while leading his team to a win.

The loss to a one-legged Mahomes is plenty of motivation for Burrow in Week 1. Throwing Grossi's comments into the mix just means it could be an extremely long September afternoon for the Browns in Week 1.
