Browns’ defensive starter makes promising admission about where Cleveland QB Shedeur Sanders currently stands
Cleveland Browns have a quarterback battle going on between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. Browns CB Tyson Campbell’s take on where Sanders stands is one worth noting.
The Cleveland Browns take on Day 2 of mandatory minicamp on Wednesday. Once again, much of the attention will be on the starting quarterback competition between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders.
Watson has been seen as the favorite for the job most of the offseason, but the fact that things are still neck and neck paints the picture of Sanders having a legit chance at being the Week 1 starter.
Sanders has to show improvement from year one to year two, and it sounds like the Browns’ second-year quarterback has done a good job of it.
Shedeur Sanders’ teammate calls it as he sees it with how his game is growing
“From the point I got to the Browns, then that season, all the way to now, you can see the growth big time,” Browns CB Tyson Campbell said Tuesday. “The way he carries himself, the way he practices, you can tell he’s being even more than the pro that he was last year, and he’s getting better, and he’s getting more comfortable in the offense, and he’s gonna make the plays.”
This isn’t anything unexpected. Sanders has made it through one full season and is close to wrapping up his first full offseason with the Browns. Sanders struggled with sloppy play that led to 12 turnovers as a rookie, 10 of those were interceptions. The former fifth-round pick showed the ability to create explosive pass plays, but turnovers hindered any momentum he built.
Todd Monken is going to go with whoever gives him the best chance to win as a first-year head coach with the Browns. A coach who has waited years to get his chance at being the guy in charge can’t risk having a worse season than the Browns did last year at 5-12, or he’ll be one and done.
We’re now looking at a quarterback battle that’s going to stretch into training camp and maybe even a couple of weeks into it. Sanders is right there in the battle, and his growth as a quarterback is exactly why. If his teammates are seeing it, especially on the defensive side of the football, it’s a positive development for Cleveland.
