3 biggest winners from Dallas Cowboys mandatory minicamp, spearheaded by an obvious but correct choice
The Dallas Cowboys’ mandatory minicamp has come to a close. Here are three players who boosted their stocks prior to training camp.
There’s not a lot you can take away from two practices without any live contact. But there are still three winners stemming from the Dallas Cowboys mandatory minicamp this week.
And what better place to start with than star wide receiver George Pickens? Let’s dive in.
WR George Pickens: Winner
It’s an obvious pick to start the list, but the correct one. Without having to do much on the practice field, Pickens boosted his stock in the short and long term.
Despite the lack of a long-term deal with the Cowboys, showing up was the best choice Pickens could have made. With it, he sends a message to NFL teams who could be interested in him in the future that he’s focused on playing winning football. And in the locker room, it reaffirms Pickens as a standout teammate, which fits the reviews we heard from players all of last year.
LT Tyler Guyton: Winner
Guyton is supposed to be competing for the left tackle job with Nate Thomas, but one development made it seem like he’s the clear-cut front runner for the job. Thomas took second-team snaps at right tackle, while rookie Drew Shelton took second-team reps at left tackle.
Now, the players aren’t even on pads so we shouldn’t be making too much out of this. But it sure looks like a promising sign for Guyton. Thomas is getting the kind of workload a swing tackle would get. Guyton reaffirmed himself as the starting left tackle but he will naturally need to win the job in camp.
CB Cobie Durant: Winner
Durant is expected to be challenged by Shavon Revel Jr. for the starting outside cornerback spot but so far, it’s been Durant taking the first-team reps. In fact, insider Joseph Hoyt from The Dallas Morning News noted that Durant and Caelen Carson were the ones starting at Cowboys minicamp.
Training camp will reveal more but right now, we can pencil in Durant as the favorite to start alongside DaRon Bland and first-round rookie Caleb Downs (projected to start at nickel).
