The 4 most shocking picks from our 2026 mega mock draft involving 16 NFL analysts: Cowboys reach at 12, Seahawks boost defense
With the NFL Draft, you can always expect big shockers. Our crew at A to Z Sports put together a mega mock ahead of the big day, here are the four most surprising picks of the collective exercise.
With the 2026 NFL Draft almost here, our crew at A to Z Sports put together a first-round “mega mock draft,” with 16 different analysts making picks on the spot in our YouTube channels.
You can check out the full mock below but in this article, we’re listing the biggest shockers of the first 32 picks. But first, an important disclaimer: There were no trades allowed in this group exercise.
Let’s dive in.
Kansas City Chiefs, Pick No. 9: OT Monroe Freeling, Georgia
With Miami’s EDGE Reuben Bain Jr. and OT Francis Mauigoa still on the board, the Chiefs surprisingly passed on both to take Freeling. Representing Kansas City, our own Charles Goldman explained he didn’t know if Bain Jr. was on their board.
“How many times as the Kansas City Chiefs are you going to have in the future where you can take whoever is your No. 1 offensive tackle?,” Goldman said. “I think that No. 1 guy is Monroe Freeling.”
Freeling scored a 97.6 athletic composite score from A to Z Sports. The Chiefs get their guy to protect Patrick Mahomes.
Dallas Cowboys, Pick No. 12: CB Colton Hood, Tennessee
I was the Cowboys GM for this mock and let me tell you, I hated the board when I was on the clock. This is exactly why Dallas should be all in on moving up to land a blue-chip defender in the Top 10.
But if the Cowboys stick and pick at 12, I wouldn’t be surprised if they reach for a cornerback they really like. It feels like there will be better options at edge rusher when you’re on the clock at No. 20.
Hood is a shocker at No. 12 as he currently ranks 33rd in the Consensus Big Board. However, he’s a high floor guy, competitive, and carries the kind of personality head coach Brian Schottenheimer wants in the locker room.
Los Angeles Chargers, Pick No. 22: EDGE Malachi Lawrence, UCF
Currently ranked 39th in the Consensus Big Board, Lawrence is a name that’s on the rise in the days leading up to the draft. Our own Kyle Crabbs sees the Chargers as a solid landing spot.
“I think Lawrence would be an awesome third pass rusher,” Crabbs explained. “Last year it was like Bud Dupree, and that was the guy. [. . .] You should be trusting the offense with Mike McDaniel coming in to score points, play with a lead, and let the pass rush ability that he has showcase itself.”
Seattle Seahawks, Pick No. 32: S Treydan Stukes, Arizona
The Seattle Seahawks picking safety Nick Emmanwori last year enabled Mike Macdonald’s defense to dictate terms in a Super Bowl season. Could they go defensive back yet again?
Our own Ryan Roberts and Kyle Crabbs think so. And he had Stukes going to Seattle! Stukes is currently 55th-best prospect on the consensus board and 60th in our A to Z Sports’ draft simulator board.
“I am so fascinated by Treydan Stukes,” Roberts said. “He’s gaining a little bit more first-round buzz down the stretch, I heard Dane Brugler mentioned it, Daniel Jeremiah mentioned it. [. . .] I think Stukes could bring some value there.”
