Why the Dallas Cowboys will exceed win expectations in 2026 NFL season, including the biggest improvement you can expect on defense
Defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s biggest impact on defense could be one of three keys for Dallas Cowboys to exceed their projected win total for the 2026 season.
How many games will the Dallas Cowboys win in 2026? Well, if you ask oddsmakers, they will have a very specific answer for you: 9.5
You see, every year, each team gets a “win total” projection in the betting world and bettors get to choose if they take the over or the under (the half win reduces the number of betting pushes).
In a previous article, I made the case for the under. But this time, we’re taking the glass-half-full approach by looking at three reasons why the Cowboys will win over 9.5 games. In other words, ten or more wins.
Three reasons why Cowboys will exceed win total expectations
1. Fewer busted coverages and big plays
Think about what we saw from Dallas in 2025: busted coverages everywhere. Cornerbacks who misplayed their assignment while the safety was in a different coverage call and the other way around. Linebackers and safeties shooting the wrong gap.
That happened constantly under defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus early in the season. According to Sports Info Solutions, the Cowboys gave up the third most explosive plays versus the pass and the fifth most versus the run (percentage wise).
I don’t see that happening under Parker. This defense demands heavy communication, and it will take time to mesh, but the fundamental schematic confusion should be gone. In the run game, the personnel upgrades matter too. DeMarvion Overshown and Dee Winters replace linebackers who were consistently out of position. Downs and Jalen Thompson bring stability at safety. Durant is a better tackler than Trevon Diggs. An average defense might be enough if the offense holds up its end.
2. The Big 3 are back
George Pickens, CeeDee Lamb, and Dak Prescott together for a full offseason. This offense was dangerous in 2025. It should be even more dangerous in 2026. When Lamb went down injured last season and Pickens had to emerge as the top target, the Cowboys discovered he could dominate from the slot. Klayton Adams even acknowledged early in the year that the coaching staff didn’t realize Pickens could do what he did after the catch working inside.
Now Dallas has a full offseason to scheme around two ultimate chess pieces at wide receiver. The No. 3 receiver spot is also settled with Ryan Flournoy, who was very good in his second NFL season.
3. Offensive tackle concerns are erased
I’ve talked about offensive tackle being a worry all offseason, but Dallas did a good job masking that weakness in 2025. Prescott gets rid of the football quickly. The scheme prioritized max protection on second-and-short and third-and-short situations, rolling out play-action concepts with seven-man protection that let Prescott throw deep to Pickens and Lamb.
Tyler Guyton and Terence Steele may not be great in pass protection, but I’m confident the Cowboys can make it work again.
I had Dallas at 10-7 in my game-by-game predictions. For now, I’d lean over. We’ll see if it happens.
