Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer has insisted on a key point regarding Micah Parsons' on-and-off attendance to OTAs: This is the voluntary phase of the offseason. But what about next week?
Next Tuesday, the Cowboys will be reporting to mandatory minicamp. Players who don't show up can be fined but that is little threat to those negotiating a massive deal like Parsons is. Last year, CeeDee Lamb skipped minicamp and later, training camp. It happens every year around the league.
Parsons, however, has handled things differently. He's been vocal about not missing out on training camp, even. However, you never know how things are evolving behind the scenes, which is why Schottenheimer was inevitably asked about it during Tuesday's press conference.
"I would assume (he's attending)," Schottenheimer told reporters. "Micah and I talked a couple of days ago, again, he's doing a little bit of traveling. But everything that he and I have talked about, I expect for him to be there."
Parsons missing OTAs shouldn't be seen as a negotiating strategy. Last year, when he admittedly sat out negotiations because it was Dak Prescott's and Lamb's turn, he also spent time away from the team. However, Schottenheimer has been outspoken about the star defender's involvement with the team's prep.
"Like I said and I say each and every week, Micah and I have had great communication, everything I've asked him to do and viceversa, he's followed through," Schottenheimer added. "I would expect to see him."
Parsons has been so involved with the team that he was even a part of the team's marketing strategy ahead of this year's schedule release last month. Ultimately, he's been keeping his word about not "holding out."
Next Tuesday will mark the first time he's required to be at practice and it's looking like the Cowboys aren't in for an unwelcome surprise.
