DeMarcus Lawrence adds salt to last year’s wound with message to former Cowboys player who is now joining the Seahawks

A former Dallas Cowboys player is finally landing with a new team, and it’s one that may sting for fans still getting over DeMarcus Lawrence’s words about Dallas’ chances of winning a Super Bowl.

You have to love an athlete who calls his shot and then delivers. But for Dallas Cowboys fans, there is an obvious exception. And it’s one that still stings.

When defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence claimed he went to the Seattle Seahawks knowing he wouldn’t win a Super Bowl in Dallas only to immediately win one with his new team, it hurt.

Sure, it was cool to see him get a ring and fans were happy for him. But the Cowboys haven’t been to an NFC Championship Game in over 30 years. Lawrence left to win, as did DeMarcus Ware before him, among others. It’s a tough trend to deal with.

And now, Lawrence added some salt to the wound he originally left in Cowboys Nation last year. The worst part is he probably isn’t doing it intentionally and yet fans feel it.

Lawrence sent message to former Cowboy to get him to Seattle

Earlier in the week, the Seahawks signed DE Dante Fowler Jr., who spent the 2022, 2023, and 2025 seasons with the Cowboys.

In a recent interview with the team, Fowler Jr. revealed Lawrence played a major role in his decision.

“We talked for like 30 minutes on FaceTime, just chopping it up, and after that I made my decision,” Fowler Jr. told the media before relaying Lawrence’s message to him. “If you want to win a Super Bowl, you should come here.”

Ouch.

Listen, the Cowboys weren’t interested in bringing back Fowler Jr. after he hit free agency in March. So this isn’t even about the Seahawks “stealing” one of their guys. He wasn’t going to return to Dallas regardless. It’s more about the truth in Lawrence’s words so far.

Last year, Lawrence’s words were controversial and even earned him criticism. Now, they’re backed up by a Lombardi Trophy.

Fowler Jr. wasn’t a standout for the Cowboys but rather a rotational player. And still, he now appears to be closer to a Super Bowl even though Dallas didn’t even want him back.

It’s been a long wait for Cowboys fans. The hope is Brian Schottenheimer’s culture, which is already leading to changes, is enough to get Dallas in contention in the near future. But there’s a long way to go, starting with a defensive rebuild that could make or break their chances this year.
