Dallas Cowboys make last minute signing leading up to OTAs, adding intrigue to position battle
The Dallas Cowboys are signing another rookie wide receiver ahead of OTAs on Monday. And he may just have a chance to push for a roster or practice squad spot.
It’s never too late to add talent to your roster. Even moments before the start of OTAs. That’s what the Dallas Cowboys did Monday morning when they signed another wide receiver to their team.
And his arrival adds intrigue to an overlooked position battle.
Cowboys sign WR Romello Brinson
The Cowboys signed former SMU wide receiver Romello Brinson, per Tommy Yarrish from DallasCowboys.com.
“Brinson began his collegiate career at Miami before transferring to SMU in 2023,” wrote Yarrish on social media. “In his final season with the Mustangs (2025), Brinson caught 43 passes for 638 yards and three touchdowns.”
At 6-foot-2 and 190 pounds, Brinson fits the Cowboys’ previous bets on late round picks and undrafted signings of wide receivers with a promising combination of size and speed. He has a long way to go as a route runner but he may find a way to make the bottom-of-the-depth-chart battle at wide receiver more interesting.
Door is wide open at bottom of wide receiver depth chart
The top receivers of the Cowboys are locked in. You can easily expect CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, Ryan Flournoy, and KaVontae Turpin to make the team. Beyond that, though, it’s a wide open competition and Brinson can throw his hat on the ring.
The battle should include the likes of seventh-round draft pick Anthony Smith and fellow undrafted free agents Jordan Hudson (also from SMU) and Camden Brown. Jonathan Mingo, Traeshon Holden, Tyler Johnson, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling round out the room.
If Brinson wants to compete for a spot on the roster or even the practice squad, he’ll have to show out on special teams. With the top of the WR room being so solid, it’s unlikely he’ll get on the field on offense. So whoever makes it as the last WR on the roster will likely have to achieve so through special teams.
Before signing with the Cowboys, Brinson was a rookie minicamp invite for the Miami Dolphins.
