Taking a look at the 5 best NFL free agents available, it's clear the Dallas Cowboys should make more signings before it's too late

Free agency frenzy has died off and focus seems to be turning to the 2025 NFL Draft. But there are still plenty of quality players available that could make sense for the Dallas Cowboys.
Now let me be clear: When I say they "make sense" for the Cowboys, I not only mean they would be positive additions for the roster but they also fit the type of players the front office likes to target.
That is, in short, players at a discount. Whether it's injuries, past failures, or age, the Cowboys like to target players with talent that are bargains for a specific reason.
If you want an example, I'd point toward the four former first-round draft picks they've acquired this offseason. None of them have had exactly successful careers but Dallas is hoping they can develop them and "fix them:"
- CB Kaiir Elam
- DT Solomon Thomas
- DE Payton Turner
- LB Kenneth Murray
In a way, Dante Fowler Jr. could make the above list a little longer but I'm not counting him as he's returning to Dallas after a year in Washington and could be seen as a different profile.
Anyways, plenty of the top NFL free agents available after two weeks of the new league year could be legit targets for Dallas. As such, using NFL.com's list of the 50 best players waiting to sign a deal, let's take a look at who does and doesn't make sense for the Cowboys:
WR Amari Cooper
- Does it makes sense? It could.
Earlier in the offseason, I hypothesized Cooper could be in for an unfavorable market. There were – and still are – other wide receiver options available and his price could be too high for a player fresh off of a down year and a wrist injury.
The fact that he remains available could mean I wasn't that far off. So if he ends up settling for less, that could mean the Cowboys could target him. Sure, his stay in Dallas didn't end in a positive note. But if the price is right for the Joneses (meaning, low enough), I wouldn't rule out a return to The Star.
CB Asante Samuel Jr.
- Does it make sense? Yes but…
The Cowboys badly need cornerback help after losing Jourdan Lewis in free agency but I'm not sure Matt Eberflus' scheme fits Samuel Jr., who is considered a zone specialist. But need combined with potential bargain status due to a shoulder injury could be enough to entice Dallas.
Samuel Jr. is only 25 years old and has played well in his career, which makes me think he'll be just out of the team's price range.
QB Aaron Rodgers
- Does it make sense? Not even a little bit.
I'm sure you don't expect me to elaborate on this one. Two words: Dak Prescott.
But hey, Cowboys fans might see Rodgers multiple times this year as he might just stay in the NFC East if the Pittsburgh Steelers don't seal the deal, as Ian Rapoport reports the New York Giants are still in the sweepstakes for the four-time MVP.
WR Stefon Diggs
- Does it make sense? You'd like it to but not really.
I might be alone in this train of thought but Diggs is probably not going to come at that large of a discount. Even though he tore his ACL last season, he was playing good football, unlike Cooper, who struggled to earn a role in Buffalo.
Cooper makes sense because he might end up signing for less than expected. But I view Diggs as a player unlikely to sign a deal under $15 million per year.
DL Calais Campbell
- Does it make sense: Yes but Dallas has made its bet.
The versatile defensive lineman has yet to be slowed down by age as he put on a great 2024 NFL season in Miami. I'd love the Cowboys to target Campbell but they've already added multiple defensive linemen and I'd be surprised if they target the veteran at this point. However, him being 39 years old is likely going to make him cheap. I wouldn't hesitate to strike a deal.
