OTAs are certainly too early to be definitive about anything, but Jordan Love and Matthew Golden are clearly working to make big things for the Green Bay Packers. On the first day of practice open to the media, the quarterback was already working to build chemistry with the rookie first-round wide receiver.
According to Packers analyst Andy Herman, who was at practice, "This will not come as a surprise but there is a pace to Matthew Golden's routes that is very fun." Coming out of Texas, Golden is a polished receiver and route runner, and this is an aspect that caught the front office's attention.
"Really excited to bring Matthew into the fold, I think he's gonna do a lot of things for us," general manager Brian Gutekunst said after the first round. "Obviously he's a very gifted athlete, gifted football player. But he's also wired exactly how we want our guys in the locker room. I think he's gonna fit in really well."
During a softball charity game last Friday, Jordan Love talked about the potential Golden has, and what they can build together for the Packers.
"He's a great dude. I'm excited to see just his potential on the football field," Love said. "But just the start we've had, doing routes on air and things like that, he looks like a stud, looks like a very polished receiver, so I'm excited to see just how far he can take it."
A strong connection between Love and Golden would be huge for the Packers, for obvious reasons, and not only for this year. Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks are the only non-rookie receivers under contract beyond 2025, so Golden is a big piece of the puzzle thinking about the future.
"He's one of those guys. Covering him from a man perspective is gonna be extremely tough," Gutekunst added. "We get to some of those third downs when people are trying to mug us up, and you need someone to get open fast, he can do that. This goes back, and I can hear Ted (Thompson) in my head, you gotta catch it, and he had such good hands. For me, that was a big part of it too."
It's the start of the journey, and there are a lot of steps to go through. But the sight of Love and Golden playing together is certainly exciting for Green Bay—and its fans.
