Romeo Doubs delivers heartfelt response when asked about upcoming matchup against Packers in his first season with the Patriots
The wide receiver signed a four-year contract with New England. He will face off his former team during the 2026 season, but there are no hard feelings.
It’s usual for NFL players that walk away from teams to have anger or some type of revenge feeling against their previous squads. That’s clearly not the case for wide receiver Romeo Doubs.
Even though the Green Bay Packers didn’t re-sign him, and Doubs ended up getting a four-year, $68 million contract from the New England Patriots in free agency, there’s still a positive feeling about his first NFL team.
NFL schedule will allow Doubs to face the Packers
The league will reveal the full regular season schedule on Thursday night, but we already know that the Packers and Patriots will face off in 2026. For Doubs, it won’t be just another game. But that doesn’t mean there are hard feelings towards his former team.
“Nah, man. Green Bay took care of me,” Doubs said. “It wouldn’t be a reason for me to have that type of pressure against them.”
Doubs, who wasn’t necessarily the most vocal player during his time in Green Bay, expanded his answer to detail how impactful the Packers were in his career after taking him in the fourth round back in 2022.
“Because again, my career started there,” Doubs added. “They taught me the foundation of football, how football works, situational football, understanding complementary football, just the overall game in general. They showed me the ropes in that area. And again, I do know that we play them this year, but no, it’s not even like that.”
Circumstances defined Doubs’ future
Romeo Doubs had a solid four-year stint with the Packers throughout his rookie deal. He totaled 202 receptions for 2,424 receiving yards, and 21 touchdowns. Last year, he even had a role as a punt returner.
However, the Packers drafted Matthew Golden and Savion Williams last year. The team decided to extend Christian Watson and Jayden Reed instead, so Doubs became more expendable.
Nevertheless, the free agency experience was positive for Doubs. He signed a strong deal with New England and got guarantees through the second year of his contract, something the Packers only do for quarterbacks (and for Micah Parsons). Doubs will make $35 million over his first two seasons in New England, and that’s fully guaranteed at signing.
After all, Romeo Doubs has the perfect understanding of the situation. His time with the Packers was positive for both sides, and moving on was the best decision for both as well. That’s just the business side of the NFL.
