When the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, their offense will have its hands full against Philadelphia's defense.

Check out the rankings for the Eagles' defense during the 2024 regular season.

  • Total defense: 1st
  • Pass defense: 1st
  • Run defense: 10th
  • Points allowed: 2nd
  • Takeaways: 6th
  • Sacks: 15th

That is about as well-rounded as a unit can possibly be. There are no glaring weaknesses for Philadelphia's defense, which features two All-Pros – linebacker Zack Baun and defensive tackle Jalen Carter. Although they didn't get the nods, defensive backs Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson are All-Pro worthy.

Not only is there plenty of talent to go around, but defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is the mastermind behind it all. Fangio has coached in the NFL nearly every year since 1986, and has a reputation for having a sharp mind for defense. The Eagles are the seventh team that Fangio has served as defensive coordinator for during his career.

The Chiefs know Fangio well from his time as the Denver Broncos' head coach from 2019-2021. Kansas City defeated Fangio all six times that they met, and did so in mostly dominant fashion, winning those games by an average by 15 points. The Chiefs also beat Fangio twice in 2023 when he was the defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has had a lot of success against Fangio. As Ryan Hannable of BetMGM pointed out on X, Mahomes has a perfect 8-0 record and a 10-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio against Fangio-led defenses.

Mahomes, along with coach Andy Reid and tight end Travis Kelce, should mostly know what to expect from Fangio when they meet again during the Super Bowl. Sure, the players are different and there may be a couple of new wrinkles, but the scheme and tendencies from Fangio will largely remain the same. The Chiefs' offense will still need to execute at a high level to be successful against the talented Eagles' defense, but it should be very well prepared mentally
