Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce whipped out some "Classic Kelce" on Monday night against the New Orleans Saints.
Facing a third-and-21 conversion, No. 87 dazzled with his signature lateral play. He pitched the ball after a five-yard catch, this time to RB Samaje Perine, who was able to carry the ball for another 15 yards. This left Kansas City with a fourth-and-1 decision, with Carson Steele rumbling ahead to keep the drive alive. It would help Kansas City extend their lead to six points with time winding down in the second half.
Lisa Salters spoke to Chiefs HC Andy Reid before he went into the locker room for halftime, asking him whether or not the play between Kelce and Perine was scripted. It was something that Joe Buck and Troy Aikman desperately wanted the answer to. Reid said that it's something they practice. There's evidence for that, too. Kelce practiced the play during training camp with RB Isiah Pacheco. However, Reid's comments to Salter suggested this wasn't a called play.
Perine confirmed as much in the locker room following the game.
"It was not scripted, I can tell you that much," Perine said, with a grin. "I saw him do it a couple of times in practice, so I was like, 'Uh, I'll stay in phase just in case.' And sure enough, I saw him switch the ball and wind and throw it back. I was just ready for it."
Asked whether Kelce had ever thrown him a lateral in practice before, Perine admitted that it had never happened before the Week 5 game against the Saints.
"No, just in general, he does that in practice," Perine said. "I was just ready for it."
Perine also confirmed he's never had another teammate before who has actively practiced or been willing to do a lateral play like that before.
"Yeah, it's just like playing backyard football," Perine said. "Just to experience it firsthand was crazy, but it was fun."
