The Kansas City Chiefs have been hard at work during the 2026 NFL free agency period, looking to put a disappointing 2025 season behind them and build for the future.

With several important players departing through free agency, building a championship-caliber roster won’t be an easy task for the Chiefs. As of Monday, Mar. 16, Brett Veach has a great foundation for the team’s 90-man offseason roster, but there’s still more work to be done through the 2026 NFL Draft and undrafted free agency.

The Chiefs currently have 64 players under contract for the 2026 NFL offseason

There are still things to play out in free agency, but the majority of the big spending and needle-moving decisions have come and gone. The 90-man offseason roster will continue to change throughout the offseason, but the biggest changes yet to come will be through the team’s nine selections in the 2026 NFL Draft at the end of April.

Biggest issues facing the Chiefs’ roster heading into the 2026 NFL Draft

The 2026 NFL free agency period didn’t present many financially sound opportunities to improve the edge rush group. As things stand, this is virtually the same group of players minus Mike Danna, which means it might even be worse than it was a season ago. They’re going to need to exhaust some draft capital to really fix that spot in the draft.

The departures of CBs Trent McDuffie, Jaylen Watson, and Josh Williams are pretty jarring, even knowing that they had some depth waiting in the wings in Nohl Williams and Kristian Fulton. Just from a pure numbers standpoint, they need more bodies there. I still think they’ve got room to make some strong investments there. Linebacker and safety could also use some more love after the losses of Leo Chenal and Bryan Cook.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Chiefs are still about 4-5 players shy of what they typically like on the 90-man roster. The backup quarterback spot looks good now that the team traded to acquire Jets QB Justin Fields. Running back could also use another body or two, potentially with Kareem Hunt as a veteran addition after the draft.
