Fernando Mendoza says what every single Las Vegas Raiders fan wants to hear as training camp nears
The Las Vegas Raiders have one of the best fan bases in all of professional sports, and Fernando Mendoza knows that.
The Las Vegas Raiders are building something new heading into the 2026 season, and No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza is at the center of it.
The former Indiana quarterback, set to be the franchise signal-caller in Las Vegas, recently appeared on Maxx Crosby’s podcast, The Rush, and delivered a message that should resonate with fans across the board. Mendoza’s words, his work ethic, and his understanding of what it means to wear the Silver and Black all point to the Raiders landing the right guy.
Mendoza’s message to the fan base
On the podcast, Mendoza made his appreciation for the Raiders and their fans crystal clear.
“The fans are awesome. I’m hyped and blessed to be a part of it,” Mendoza said. “It’s given me that much more motivation to do everything possible I can to then best serve my teammates, coaches, the culture, and the fans.”
That’s exactly what you want to hear from a No. 1 overall pick. He understands the weight of the franchise, and he’s embracing it.
Crosby himself has said that playing for the Raiders is different than playing for any other franchise. It means more. There’s a history in this organization that needs to be tapped into, and while the on-field results haven’t been there recently, the pride of wearing that shield has never gone away. Mendoza already gets that, and he’s made it abundantly clear.
The work is already showing
Mendoza isn’t the starter right away, but that hasn’t slowed him down. By all accounts, he’s been putting in relentless work since arriving in Las Vegas, and he’s already showing improvement in areas where he needed development. The Raiders love what they’ve seen from him so far, and the effort he’s pouring into the process has not gone unnoticed.
From a maturity standpoint, Mendoza checks every box you’d want from a franchise quarterback. He knows the position he’s in. He knows the expectations. And rather than shy away from any of it, he’s leaning into the challenge. There are still things he needs to work on, as is the case with nearly every player in the league. But the mental side of the equation is already there, and that’s often the hardest part to develop.
Why this matters for the Raiders
Las Vegas has been searching for a true franchise quarterback for a long time. The Raiders have cycled through options, and none of them stuck. Mendoza represents the best chance this organization has had in years to finally settle the position.
What separates him from previous attempts isn’t just talent. It’s the buy-in. Mendoza isn’t just saying the right things for the cameras. The way he’s approached the offseason, the way he talks about the culture and the fans, and the way his teammates are already responding to him all suggest he genuinely means it. When a guy like Crosby gives his stamp of approval, that carries weight in that locker room.
Now, Vegas just has to let the development play out. Mendoza has the tools, the mindset, and the motivation. If the on-field growth matches what he’s shown off of it, the Raiders could finally have their guy.
