The Las Vegas Raiders have continued their defensive run by taking players in the secondary. They started with Arizona safety Treydan Stukes in the second round, then drafted Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy in the fourth round. Now, they’re taking Arizona safety Dalton Johnson in the fifth round.

Johnson is just under 6’0, is 190 pounds, and has 31″ arms. He’s got decent length to help contest passes in the backend of the secondary. He’s pretty fast, too, as he ran a 4.41 40-yard dash. He also had a 1.59 10-yard split, 36″ vertical jump, and a 9’11” broad jump. Johnson is pretty athletic, and the Raiders needed another safety on this roster, even after Stukes, as they had only three prior to draft day.

Raiders take two safeties and two Arizona players

The Raiders have three safeties on the roster. They have Isaiah Pola-Mao, Jeremy Chinn, and Tristin McCollum. Here’s the catch, though. All of them are box-like safeties, where they do their best work closer to the line of scrimmage. They can’t really cover well. The other side of this is that they are all three on one-year deals for this season. There is no way they will bring all three back.

The Raiders were always going to get one safety. They got Stukes who’s elite. There was always an idea that they would get two guys; however, I wasn’t sure they would get both before the last two rounds. And, they got teammates, two guys who played in the secondary together, and played off one another together. This is great, it helps chemistry, and you’re getting two guys who are good and will play right away.

Dalton Johnson Scouting Report

Treydan Stukes is the defensive back from Arizona that everyone will talk about, but Dalton Johnson could turn out to be a solid player in the league. He doesn’t have the best measurables at sub-5-10 and under 200 pounds, but he tested very well, and you can see his functional athleticism on tape.

Final grade

The Raiders really needed another safety, and another safety who can cover a bit. They got that in Johnson, and they traded up to get him during a moment when defensive backs started to make a run. This is a good pick by the Raiders, but I expected another safety later in the draft. I give it a B+
