Raiders DC Rob Leonard has the perfect descriptor for one of his newest weapons that has to get fans excited for what’s to come
The Las Vegas Raiders are set to have a much-improved defense in 2026 than they did in 2027.
The Las Vegas Raiders are at OTAs again, in their third week of them this offseason. So, they have had plenty of time to see what they’re working with, including the new players and even new coaches in new roles.
One of the more intriguing positions heading into the season is linebacker. They have two new starters there that they paid both a ton of money for. One is getting the attention of his new coach while being described in a unique way.
“He’s [Quay Walker] an avatar out there,” defensive coordinator Rob Leonard told reporters on Wednesday. “He looks like an outside linebacker who can play both off and on the ball. He’s a leader. He and Nakobe [Dean] have been great.”
The position group was horrible, with players like Devin White and Elandon Roberts as the best two LBs on the roster last season. At one point, Vegas even moved Jamal Adams, the former safety, into the position.
Walker still has significant untapped potential, especially as an outside linebacker in this 3-4 defense. He was often not played to best suit his skill set. The Raiders will rely on him heavily, and he could certainly deliver. No matter what, he is miles better than what Vegas already had.
Rob Leonard mentioning Nakobe Dean is great
Nakobe Dean has not yet been at OTAs. So, hearing Leonard personally mention him when talking about another player, and hearing him talk about his leadership, is good. Some fans have been freaking out about this. However, there are recent rumors on social media that he and his wife just had a child. That would certainly excuse the absence. And, even if it’s not the case, it’s fine.
Dean not being there isn’t as big a deal. He just signed with the Raiders in the offseason, so his absence isn’t because he’s asking for any money or anything like that. Taron Johnson, on the other hand, could be asking for more money. He did show up to his first OTA practice on Tuesday.
