John Spytek has his fingerprint all over the Las Vegas Raiders’ most recent roster move, and there’s no hiding it
The Las Vegas Raiders have brought on a new linebacker, and it’s clear that John Spytek is a big fan of his.
The Las Vegas Raiders are making roster moves to build their best team. Every spot among the 90 is vital, so expect ongoing changes as they refine their lineup, as shown by Tuesday’s activity.
Of course, Vegas started with the move that waived Hall of Famer Jerry Rice’s son, Brenden Rice. He was formerly on the Los Angeles Chargers and was picked up by the Raiders as a potential final WR on the roster.
Unfortunately, the Raiders moved on. Now they have signed former Michigan Wolverines LB Cameron McGrone. Spytek is a former Michigan alum, so of course, he was excited to get this guy.
The Raiders are still looking for help at the backend of their roster at the linebacker spot. Yes, they signed two guys in Quay Walker and Nakobe Dean this offseason to mega deals. But the depth behind them is not good at all. Vegas is trying to fix that, and maybe McGrone can be a solution.
Who is Cameron McGrone?
Between 2018 and 2020, McGrone played inside linebacker for Michigan, starting in 15 of 19 games. He tallied 92 tackles, including 52 solo stops, 11.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and one pass breakup.
His standout year came as a sophomore in 2019, when he started 10 games, earned All-Big Ten honorable mention, and made 66 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, and four sacks. Though an ACL injury hampered his final season, he continued to display strong athleticism, football instincts, and reliable tackling.
McGrone was chosen by the New England Patriots in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft with the 177th pick. He later had stints with the Patriots (2021–2022), Indianapolis Colts (2022–2025), and Cleveland Browns (2025).
Across 27 career games through 2025, he recorded about 13 tackles, mainly contributing on special teams with nine of those tackles. He has generally served as a backup linebacker and core special teams player rather than a regular starter.
