Top Storylines Heading into the Game
Trey Lance Development
One of the bright spots for the Chargers in their Hall of Fame Game win was the play of fourth-year quarterback Trey Lance. Lance had quite the debut with the Chargers, completing 13 out of 20 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. He displayed good poise, accuracy, and decision-making while methodically moving the offense down the field. The Chargers will be keen to see how Lance plays in the second preseason game and will feel pretty good about their backup quarterback with another strong performance.
Tre Harris Breakout Game?
The Chargers had a rookie receiver excel in the Hall of Fame game, but it was not their highest-drafted one. Fifth-round rookie KeAndre Lambert-Smith had a strong performance against the Lions, hauling two passes for 43 yards and a touchdown. He showcased his route running, speed, and ball skills while appearing to be a player the Chargers can count on this season. With that said, the rookie many expected to be an impact player for the Chargers was second-round pick Tre Harris. Harris was held without a catch in his preseason debut, and fans should be excited to see him take the field versus the Saints. Sunday’s matchup against the Saints could be Harris’s opportunity to impress the Chargers’ coaches and work his way up the depth chart.
Offensive Line Reshuffling
With Slater out for the season, the Chargers must figure out how best to replace him moving forward. Some options would require the Chargers to move players around the offensive line and reshuffle to get their best five on the field come week one. It will be interesting to see if the Chargers begin to tinker with potential lineup changes against the Saints and see who may be the best fit at a new position upfront. Keep an eye on players such as Jamaree Salyer and Trey Pipkins as they could be a significant factor in replacing Slater.
