For the third time in five years, head coach Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams will be looking for a new defensive coordinator.

Raheem Morris is set to become the next head coach for the Atlanta Falcons, the team he was perviously coaching for prior to landing on the West Coast.

The vacancy Morris leaves behind is great, but is the parting gift the Rams will receive in the process.

The NFL passed a resolution in 2020 in an effort to promote the advancement of minority coaches and executives.

A team that lose a minority coach or executive to a head coach or general manager job with another team will receive a third-round compensatory pick for two consecutive years.

Because Morris was a minority head coaching hire, the Rams will receive a third-round compensatory pick in the 2024 and 2025 NFL Drafts.

The Rams are not the only NFC West team to go through this process. The San Francisco 49ers saw former offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel and former defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans leave for head coaching gigs in back-to-back years.

The Niners used one of their compensatory picks to select kicker Jake Moody, who was recently named to the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie team

Los Angeles hit it out of the park in last year's draft, selecting PFWA All-Rookie team selections Puka Nacua, Steve Avila, Kobie Turner, and Byron Young. Morris leaving gives them another swing this year and next to do the same.
