Now is not the time for fear regarding the Miami Dolphins’ lack of an extension for LB Jordyn Brooks

The Miami Dolphins may not reach an extension with linebacker Jordyn Brooks, but we haven’t reached the point of concern just yet.

The Miami Dolphins have landed several key contract extensions with their best players this offseason.

The last man standing is linebacker Jordyn Brooks. Brooks, who has proven himself to be the heartbeat of Miami’s defense the past two seasons, is entering into the final year of his initial three year contract with the Dolphins in 2026. And while the Miami Dolphins’ defense has had their fair share of ups and downs over the past two years, you’d be hard pressed to say Brooks isn’t a part of the solution. Yet there’s no contract. At what point do we worry?

At what point should we be worried about no contract extension for LB Jordyn Brooks?

The short answer is “not yet”! There are a series of “deadlines” that play out throughout the course of the summer and we haven’t seen most of them yet. The NFL Draft is a “deadline” — it is a major event where investments (draft picks) become concrete. The June 1st date is a deadline, too. At that point, teams get a new influx of spending power via June 1st designated cuts. Report deadlines for training camp is next. And then, of course, there’s the end of training camp.

Any deadlines beyond that point would include the trade deadline (to get something for a player not in the team’s plans), and then the franchise tag deadline next winter.

If you’re hoping for a long-term marriage between the Miami Dolphins and Jordyn Brooks, you probably have until the end of the preseason before you hit a point of concern. The Miami Dolphins, with executive Brandon Shore apart of the effort, landed their extension with Zach Sieler last summer on August 3rd. Most extensions across the league that reach into August happen early in the month, but sometimes you do see a team agree to a contract at the midnight hour of the regular season.

So don’t fear. At least not yet. Based on Miami’s offseason tone, we will unfortunately endure trade speculation around Brooks in the meantime. If that were to happen, it could come at any point. It is what it is. But the contract stuff? Let’s wait until late August to read into anything and decide there’s a problem.
