The Miami Dolphins have officially landed one of the hottest free agents from the spring league
The Miami Dolphins’ newest addition is a UFL standout who just so happens to play a major position of need.
When you list out the positions with questions on the Miami Dolphins‘ 2026 roster, safety may not be the first group you point to. But it is certainly on the list.
The Dolphins’ hopes on the back end appear to be rooted in a major leap from second-year pro Dante Trader Jr., plus someone else emerging from the pack to give Miami surprisingly good play. The candidates thus far include veteran journeyman Lonnie Johnson, former Packer and special teams standout Zayne Anderson. You could, technically, invoke the name of rookie defender Kyle Louis, too — although he’s more of a linebacker/safety hybrid. But as of today, there’s a new name on the list. The Miami Dolphins are signing UFL standout and former LSU Tiger Major Burns.
Miami Dolphins land free agent safety Major Burns from the UFL
Burns led the UFL in interceptions this spring after an up and down college career that included stops at Georgia & LSU, plus several injuries that cost him significant amounts of time. The play was at times frustratingly erratic, too. Burns, despite his size and length, was credited with a missed tackle rate of nearly 20% in two of his final three seasons with the Tigers.
The most fascinating development for Burns as a player? The ball production this spring. Yes, he was playing for the Houston Gamblers in the UFL. But in nine games, he posted more interceptions (4 versus 2) and the same amount of total passes defensed (8) as he did across five seasons in the SEC. Has a lightbulb come on? Or is this simply an mirage due to the UFL’s level of play?
The Miami Dolphins are officially primed to be the team that finds out. Make no mistake about it — there’s physical ability here. Burns is 6-foot-2 and he ran a 4.51 second 40-yard dash at 207 pounds at the LSU Pro Day in 2025. That’s NFL athleticism, for sure. At the very least, he continues the mantra of “young competition” that this team has been steadily beating the drum about this offseason. Now we’ll see if Burns can leave a mark. It’s there for the taking.
