The most important number from the Miami Dolphins’ De’Von Achane extension has now been reported
The details of the Miami Dolphins’ extension with running back De’Von Achane are out and there’s one big number you need to know.
The Miami Dolphins struck a big win for their overall offseason blueprint when it was announced that running back De’Von Achane was staying in town.
The Dolphins, after months of promising, lived up to their word. Miami secured Achane on a four-year extension worth a maximum value of $68 million in new money. The star running back was originally scheduled for just short of $6 million in compensation this season. He’ll receive more, thanks in part to a signing bonus as a part of the new deal. Thanks to a report from Pro Football Talk, we now know the details. That includes the most important number for the 2026 Miami Dolphins, too.
The Miami Dolphins’ salary cap charge for RB De’Von Achane grew by less than $850,000

The Dolphins manipulated De’Von Achane’s contract earlier this offseason in a salary cap maneuver. That included fronting him over $4 million in performance pay from his first three seasons in the NFL. It reduced the running back’s salary cap charge to just over $2.3 million this season.
That, in part, was a potential hurdle for the cap-strapped Dolphins. Their bid to getting an early contract done with De’Von Achane had less flexibility as a result. Once the team moved his compensation into the form of a bonus, any new money for 2026 in a contract extension would spur an increased cap charge. There was no more funny money to be found against the salary cap.
As it turns out, Achane will receive a grand total of $10 million in compensation this season (that’s tied for 12th among NFL running backs in 2026). The math on that checks out as follows:
- Base salary: $1.125 million
- Salary conversion into bonus (March 20th): $4.622 million
- New signing bonus from extension: $4.233 million
That $4.233 million signing bonus will be spread out into the next five years of salary cap debt in equal installments of $846,600. So the salary cap space lost for the Dolphins this season for a $68 million extension is exactly that: $846,600 in additional cap space. Achane’s reported cap charge for 2026 is now $3,154,627.
From that perspective, the Dolphins have to feel great about the De’Von Achane extension. The additional cost of business for 2026 is less than a million dollars in cap charges. Of course, there are future debts and cash commitments that come with this contract. But the guarantees give them several years to stash that into and, once 2027 rolls around, this team is going to find themselves oozing with cap flexibility.
In all, Miami’s taking this extension in stride as well as you could have hoped.
